Crane Songs

Inspired by a love for cranes

and

those who love the cranes.

It is a simple story with many layers about the King Street Kids and their adventures finding a mysterious feather.

The kids go to great lengths to identify the feather,

find the cranes,

raise money with a viral video,

have a crane festival,

and in the end

establish a crane preserve.

It's the very heart of America and how kids can do worthwhile things that you wouldn't even imagine!

Selected scenes from Crane Songs

Lin had found lots of feathers over the years. She and Carlos heard birds flying overhead. At just about that time they saw a feather drift down by Lin's feet. Carlos, "Look at that. It's huge. It looks like a primary wing feather."

Early the next week Omar went to see his uncle Saleem at the zoo. Saleem was working near the Lion exhibit. Omar, "What kind of feather is this?" Saleem, "maybe it's a California condor feather, they are huge. I guess it could also be from a turkey vulture. I just don't know for sure."

Omar, "I want a special envelope to mail a rare and valuable feather all the way to Wisconsin. Postal clerk Mike, "Who are you sending it to?"  Omar, "To the good folks at the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo for identification."

Meantime, the Whooping Cranes were showing up! Not too far from camp they did come upon the Crane tracks they were looking for... Spots lifted his left front leg and held his tail straight out.  He had spotted a Crane.

Time for the King Street Kids to prove to the doubters that Whooping Cranes were there.

It took fund raising and cameras and videos

to show those Cranes to the world!

All the town's folk and people from all around turned out for the Crane Festival.  After all who doesn't love a Fiesta?
And the King Street Kids' dream
a Whooping Crane Preserve
really, really happened!
Who would guess this group of kids
could accomplish so much for wildlife?
We would!
